Rock This!

I can’t help myself! I’m not usually one for plugging products and causes and all of that sort of thing, but you’ll understand when I say I can’t not give this one a splash: our nephew Christoffer’s band Honningbarna (Honeykids) just won Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian Grammy equivalent) for Rock! Seeing as how they’re incredibly talented guys and great people and they’ve been in the biz officially less than a couple of years but are already rocking packed houses all over northern Europe, they earned this accolade and certainly more than just from an old auntie. Kudos too to their incredibly supportive families and teachers (some, like C’s, being in both categories, since I know he got some early older-brother guitar coaching), and to the many fans-of-good-taste who are keeping the faith with them. Old folk, take heed: keep the sound turned low lest you fry your hearing aids when their blazing punk music kicks in, but you may well soon find you can’t resist cranking it up along with less ancient creatures since it’s pretty addictive stuff!

  1. What kind of Tante would you be if you didn’t herald the achievements of your nephew and his mates? And winning such an award is one heckuvan achievement! I watched some of their YouTube videos and really enjoyed what I saw. I wish I understood even the slightest bit of Norwegian because, although the band music definitely has that punk vibe, punk is really all about the lyrics. I will say this — and I don’t mean it at all in a bad way — they all look so young! I really must go look up the latest from Mick Jagger on YouTube so that my perspective of the Music World makes sense again.

    • It’s not that your lenses need adjusting–Christoffer is not quite 20, and his mates all of an age. I know some of their stuff *is* translated into English online somewhere (on their own website? I know I looked it up at some point)–if you’ve ever fiddled with GoogleTranslate you know that that’s only moderately helpful, especially when you get into things like irony or metaphor or any such complexity of meaning! The band specializes somewhat in rather anarchic political and social critique, some pretty hard-hitting and insightful stuff for such young squirts if you ask me, but then I’m just the not-so-wise old lady. 😉

    • Thank you, Fati, but I would call you *very* artistic, myself–just that you use the medium of food rather than pencils and crayons (and, definitely, the artful use of words)! 🙂

  2. Your family is practically rolling in talent! And while I am not a big fan of metal, this has a good beat – I am actually listening to it to the end and that is unheard of! Which one in the youtube pic is your nephew?

    • Christoffer is second from the left in the photo above. That’s from about a year ago, and he’s caught up in muscle with the height spurt now! No doubt all of the onstage exercise is quite a workout, among other things. 😀

  3. Congratulations to them and what’s the internet for if not to plug the achievements of our relations particularly the young talented ones. Having three artistic children I might even be tempted to do the same.
