Pardon My Love Letters

Adjusting the Balance of Powers

I make no pretense of refinement,

Charm-school graces, savoir-faire—

I’m no more mannered than a monkey

Picking cooties from its hair—

In fact, I’d never boast of

Attributes I’d likely waste,

Having little use or need for

Proving further I’ve great taste

Than I did when I selected

You as partner, lover, mate;

All alone, that one maneuver

Proved my social skills are great,

Even if the sorry outcome

On your side is to undo

Any special social standing

That once appertained to you!digital painting from a photo

  1. Brought a warm smile to my face this morning….I seem to be a bit of a step down for my mate but she seems to tolerate most of my misbehaviors. She was warned by her brothers and several of my Rugby mates about my coarseness!

    • Sounds familiar! My grandpa’s mate-choosing advice was to hunt up someone way too good for me who thought I was way too good for him. Worked perfectly in my case. And my parents, family and friends all tried to warn him but Richard just fell into my hands (arms) anyhow, poor guy. 🙂

  2. A great piece, Kathryn, but hardly the truth. I’d bet that you are equally at home among paupers or kings, and that your company isn’t just tolerated but sought after once you’ve been introduced. It’s your spirit that draws people, the rest is window dressing.

    • Well, I’ve certainly been in the presence of both paupers and kings–both kinds of both, real and figurative–and been treated with kindness by nearly all, so whether that’s because they like me or because of their innate good manners and kindness I am very fortunate and grateful for all of it!

    • The sixth is our anniversary, and I am most certainly elevated by the company I keep, at home and elsewhere. If some of it rubs off on me, all the better for everyone! 🙂

  3. What a nice piece of writing! My other half and I are the least likely two to pair up but we do it seamlessly. You just never know, often what seems wrong at first often comes to fit perfectly after you wear it for a while.

  4. By jove, I think you got it … complementing each other better than being perfectly matched! Belated congratulations on your anniversary, Kathryn! The 6th was an anniversary for me too … of my birth!

    • How very lovely that we get to share your special day! One of our great-nieces was born on the day, too. Clearly it’s a magnificent day of joy for all sorts of grand reasons.
