Long-Awaited Benison
The sweetest sound the human ear has heard
Was not a waterfall or splashing brook
To thirsty thoughts; nor thirsty mind, a book
Read out; nor singer’s voice, nor whistling bird
In spring’s cool song; it wasn’t kittens’ purr
Or baby’s comfortably cooing charms
When resting safely in his mother’s arms
—Though it might then seem wildly sweet to her—
It wasn’t the “I love you” of romance,
Nor was the sweetest sound of clinking gold,
—Though to its owner, that cannot grow old—
But rather, barring mystic happenstance,
The miracle of sound most truly sweet
Was Mama’s voice announcing, “Come and eat!”
This is a good one. I couldn’t wait for the end to see what it was and when I read it, (1) I was surprised then (2) it was a great big YEAH!!!!!!
Ohhh, you made me so happy! Thank you!! 😀 xo

Wonderful!
How sweet of you to say so. 😉
I love this, Kathryn! What a surprise ending, yet, your verses prior were so lovely…then you made me smile when it was time to eat! Great poem! xo
It’s more like bedtime than dinnertime here at the moment, but maybe I’ll go to sleep chasing sweet dreams of that siren call of Mom’s! 😉 xo
I agree 100%. If only I could here that call again. To think, there were times she had to call us twice. What ever were we doing? 🙂
Isn’t it rare for us at *any* age to be very cognizant of how great we have it?! 😉
