Thoughtless Thursday

Since a number of Web Wanderers post wonderful Wordless Wednesday items, and I’m always behind the times in oh-so-many ways, I’m posting my own version a day late (and undoubtedly a dollar short), giving you here a highly abbreviated visual history of my life as an artist. Since I’m only middle-aged, I let it end at the Middle Ages for now, though you’ll notice from some of the costumes in the last frame that I’m looking for a Renaissance to appear fairly soon. Can’t hurt to hope, can it?

P&I

I was no prodigy, and I certainly took an early interest in shortcuts and easy techniques when it came to making images, but I did always have an eye for a good juicy and dramatic storyline . . . P&IAs I grew more seriously interested in art, I was also reaching an age where one wants to Fit In, so I did my part of stylizing my imagery and making it seem, I thought, more palatable to the critics (teachers, relatives) . . .P&IThen, of course, there was that awkward age when I started to think for myself, to develop my own philosophy of what my art should or could be, and what I wanted it to be. Presumably, the reason I lost my reason entirely. You just can’t make your own art without giving up at least a little of your already tenuous hold on reality . . .P&I. . . and here you find me, wandering from village to village in the vast land of Internet, telling my tales and making my pictures without much regard for the safety and comfort of those around me, but perhaps in that most of all being at last quite true to myself, the mildly crazed artist in your midst . . .

  1. And also the mildly crazed artist I love so much.
Your ThoughtlessThursday has provoked many thoughts on me. And do stay in this village and share with us more and more and more – until I can’t say ‘more’ anymore. (:

    • Well, I can’t claim to be anywhere *near* Nye with this stuff (he’s more like a cross between George Cruikshank and Rube Goldberg–also both favorites!). But I am grateful for the compliment!

The Bill Nye that springs to mind for a former northwesterner is Seattle’s Bill Nye the Science Guy, who did silly-sketch teaching on TV of serious science for children and other ignoramuses of our older variety. Often quite amusing *and* informative, but frankly I don’t think he could draw like any of the above-mentioned!

  2. It’s such a treat coming here, Kathryn, today’s illustrations are certainly no exception. Well, except for that THING dangling from the feather in your cap. This is why there’s a can of Raid within 10 feet of me, throughout this house. You just never know when it will be needed.

    • Spray away, my good man! I thought you might forgive me for such an eensy weensy spider, perhaps, but I will understand if you wear protective gear when looking at my posts. Other people have their *own* reasons for that, after all! 😉

Suddenly I’m picturing a house with fire extinguishers full of Raid in every room . . .

    • These are quite old ones that I came across in my Box of Personal Antiquities recently and digitally revived. Funny the things one finds for weird inspirations. But then, who am I talking to: *you* are Mistress of *that* art! I bow to you. 🙂

  3. You clever, clever, girl!! You never fail to amuse and tickle, Kathryn. Thank you and thank God for “mildly crazed” artists like yourself! How we need them!

    • As you can see, I’ve been on something of a silliness binge. Not that that isn’t quite common in my experience. But I’m very glad you not only tolerate but enjoy sharing in it!

  4. Well, I’m glad you’re a mildly crazed artist, because this post made me smile and giggle, which makes me happy! Love it, Kathryn! Hugs!

p.s. I apologize for my tardiness on this Thoughtless Thursday! 🙂

    • Is there *any* other day more fitting for the tardy response than a Thoughtless one? I’m just pleased as Punch that you get some giggles hereabouts *any* time, my darling!
      xo!

  5. As you wander from village to village, you can console yourself with the thought that at least you aren’t the village idiot!
On a side note – I purchased a sketch book this weekend and am planning on scribbling a bit!
